Reflections on: وَرَأَى الْمُجْرِمُونَ النَّارَ — Sūrat al-Kahf, Āyah 53

An example of how translations of the Qur’ān may simplify meanings and not fully convey their precision

Sūrat al-Kahf: 53

وَرَأَى الْمُجْرِمُونَ النَّارَ فَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُم مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُوا عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا

English (Hilālī & Khān):

“And the Mujrimūn (criminals, polytheists, sinners) shall see the Fire and apprehend that they have to fall therein. And they will find no way of escape from there.”

The word “apprehend” may suggest a sense of fear or expectation, but it does not fully convey the certainty intended by the verb ظَنُّوا in this context.

Here, ظنّ does not carry the usual sense of doubt or assumption. Rather, in this context it means:

to be certain — a conviction strengthened by what they will witness, with no possibility of escape.

Also, notice the verb وَرَأَى (he saw) is mentioned in the past tense, even though it refers to a future event. This is from the eloquence of the Qur’ān — indicating certainty, as though it has already taken place.

As for مُّوَاقِعُوهَا, it is translated as “have to fall therein.” While this gives a general sense, the original wording is more precise and emphatic.

The word comes from the root و-ق-ع, which carries the meaning of falling upon or coming into something. Here, it appears in a derived form (Bāb III), which conveys a more direct encounter — not merely a passive fall, but an unavoidable confrontation, as though they will come into direct contact with it and face it fully.

So the meaning is not merely “falling into the Fire,” but:

that they will inevitably fall into it and come into direct encounter with it.

Furthermore, مُّوَاقِعُوهَا is in the form of an active participle (اسم فاعل).

This form indicates firmness and certainty — as though it is already established that they are from those who will fall into it.

In just a few words, a far more precise and powerful meaning is conveyed than what a simple translation may capture.
